Physics underlies the entire Universe and helps us gain a deeper understanding of the nature of the world around us. Physics is the subject that describes the very big, as we look at astronomical phenomena such as gravity and black holes. Physics is at the heart of everything. The skills learnt in studying physics can be applied in every aspect of our daily lives.
Overview of Year 7, 8 & 9 Curriculum
At ASEG we aim to teach Physics in the most engaging way possible to help every pupil attain the highest exam grade that they possibly can. We try to develop practical skills in every pupil, nurturing a love of the sciences.
Year 7: Energy, Circuits, Forces and Sound
Year 8: Particle Model, Heating and Cooling, Light and Space
Overview of the GCSE Curriculum
GCSE Physics provides a coherent and logical journey through the working laws of the universe that surrounds us. This new Physics course includes the traditional knowledge that has stood the test of time whilst including the modern Science investigated today. Questions in the written exams will draw on the knowledge and understanding pupils have gained by carrying out practical activities encountered throughout the course. These questions will count for at least 15% of the overall marks for the qualification.
We follow the AQA specification, and begin covering this in Year 9 leading to the students’ first public examinations at the end of Year 11. Studying the course over 3 years, allows us to cover the content rigorously and provide targeted help as we approach the final examinations to help students achieve the highest grades possible.
Enrichment Opportunities & Trips
We regard the curriculum as a spring-board for exploring all fields of physics, which we encourage through a broad range of extra-curricular activities, including clubs, competitions and trips.
Examples of these include:
- Physics Olympiad, AS Challenge and GCSE Challenge.
- Astronomy Club - giving students a chance to delve more deeply into one of the more captivating areas of Physics.
- Nuts and Bolts Club - which encourages students to get hands on with science and engineering tasks. So far the club have rebuilt several bicycles as well as constructing a stress analyser and a Reuben's Tube.
- Visits to Particle Physics Masterclass at the University of Manchester
