This is an accessible and fascinating subject which has an impact on every area of our everyday lives. In the GCSE course we apply knowledge to different real world organisations ranging from small enterprises to large businesses which operate across the globe. By the end of the course you will have a solid understanding of how businesses operate.

Overview of the GCSE Business Curriculum

Business is offered at GCSE and A Level and attracts students who are interested in the wider world, businesses and their role in the economy. At GCSE, in Year One, we study the process of setting up a new business: spotting a gap in the market, financing the venture, managing the marketing mix, and how the economy will influence business decisions. Year Two GCSE focuses on the growth of a business, and this is concentrating on the four main functional areas, marketing, human resources, finance and operations.

Enrichment Opportunities & Trips

Manchester Airport Dragons Den

The Business department run a highly successful enrichment programme. In Year 10 learners are invited to create a student company to take part in the Manchester Airport Dragons Den competition. Students pitch their business idea to a panel of judges and, if successful, will secure investment into their venture. Once funded the students are supported in running their very own business, making vital marketing, product, pricing and distribution decisions. The competition culminates in the student businesses presenting to a panel of judges and competing against each other for the Manchester Airport awards. This year, our students were awarded Most Innovative Product.

Young Enterprise programme

AESG students have thrived in the Young Enterprise programme offered in school. Students establish a self-funded business and are given roles within the company to reflect the structure of a large organisation. With the support of their business advisor and teacher, they create a product or service and hopefully grow the company into a profitable venture.

In recent years students have qualified for the regional finals, being awarded for their innovative products, sustainable approach and outstanding teamwork. In 2021 the student company Bead Box received international orders and posted their bead boxes as far afield as Australia! We look forward every year to supporting the growth and triumph of our new Young Enterprise company.
