We aim to give each pupil the opportunity to develop their skills and talents in a range of traditional and digital media and to become creative individuals, through a variety of ever-changing projects designed to keep ideas fresh and exciting!

We aim to inspire pupils in Year 7, 8 & 9 to:

  • Think, observe and question
  • Understand the creative process
  • Explore and experiment
  • Engage in art activities with wonder and curiosity
  • To take risks and become comfortable with ambiguity and not knowing
  • To understand how and why art is made

Overview of the GCSE Curriculum

We encourage our students, as creative individuals, to find their own strengths and interests and to be innovators. The annual art exhibition celebrates the wonderfully diverse range of artwork that our students create, ranging from large paintings, prints, photographic and art textile outcomes to innovative installations.

The course begins with a structured and guided approach as students learn new skills, explore different ways of working, and gain confidence in their understanding of the assessment objectives. As we move through the course, students take increasing ownership of their projects, completing a sustained investigation in response to a chosen theme. They evidence the journey from initial engagement with an idea through to realising intentions, and this work forms their Portfolio. We celebrate students independent ideas and encourage them to work to their strengths and interests.

In January of Year 11, students have free choice from one of seven starting points for their externally set assignment. A further practical project with a preparation period culminates in 10 hours of unaided supervised time, during which they create a personal response. The art controlled test is often a highly enjoyable experience, giving students the opportunity to sit and create over a sustained period of time.

Enrichment Opportunities

The Art Department offers a wide range of opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom. Lunchtimes include a series of focused Art Clinics for GCSE students, alongside the Lower School Art Club. Students who wish to take part in ARTiculation, the national public speaking competition for young people, can also access support during these sessions.

A Level students benefit from access to their own dedicated studio space, enabling them to work independently, develop ambitious personal projects, and immerse themselves fully in their creative practice throughout the week.

Throughout the year, students enjoy workshops and talks led by visiting artists, designers, and past alumnae, offering valuable insight into a variety of creative pathways. Students are encouraged to submit work to the prestigious Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show and to participate in ISA Arts competitions. The annual school Christmas Card Competition remains a much‑loved tradition, and Art Scholars take part in an annual exhibition trip to deepen their artistic understanding and inspiration.

Additional opportunities include the Aperture Club, run by Sixth Form photographers during the spring and summer terms, where they set creative challenges and share skills with younger students. We also maintain links with local artists and photographers, who attend the school’s Careers Fair and support students seeking work experience within the creative industries.
