At Alderley Edge School for Girls, sport in the Senior School is about more than just physical activity, it’s about building confidence, developing leadership, and fostering a strong sense of community. Our Senior pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, support one another, and take pride in their achievements both on and off the field.

Empowering Girls Through Sport

We offer a broad and ambitious sports programme that caters to all abilities and interests. Whether pupils are aiming for elite performance or simply want to stay active and have fun, our inclusive approach ensures every girl finds her place in sport.

A study commissioned by Sky and compiled by Public First has found that girls who take part in after school sport are 50% more likely to achieve senior roles later in life, with the impact comparable to the advantage of holding a First university degree.

Senior girls can participate in:

  • Hockey (teams and competitive league fixtures)
  • Netball (teams, regional and national tournament opportunities)
  • Football (teams and tournaments)
  • Cricket
  • Athletics (regional and national competitions, ISA competitions)
  • Swimming (national and regional competitions, opportunity to swim at London Olympics' pool)
  • Tennis (regional competitions)
  • Fitness & Conditioning (strength & Conditioning for Sport Scholars and use of School Fitness Suite from Year 10)
  • Badminton, Volleyball, Softball (lessons as part of the curriculum)
  • Cross Country (regional and national competitions and Friday running club)
  • Rounders (inter-school competitions and ISA competitions)

Outstanding Facilities and Coaching

Our Senior pupils benefit from access to high-quality facilities and expert coaching. The school uses Alderley Edge Hockey Club all-weather pitches, Millennium Sports Hall, outdoor tennis and netball courts and fitness suite provide the perfect environment for training and competition. We also work with specialist coaches and external clubs to support pupils with aspirations in county and national sport.

Competitive Edge

Senior teams regularly compete in local and national competitions, with many pupils representing Cheshire and beyond. Fixtures are a highlight of the school calendar, and our girls consistently demonstrate skill, determination, and sportsmanship.

National and regional Representation

Many of our pupils proudly represent both county and national teams across a wide range of sports, demonstrating exceptional commitment, skill, and passion.

From hockey and netball to athletics, swimming and even GBR Fencing, our talented athletes compete at the highest levels, often training with elite clubs and academies outside of school.

Their achievements are a testament to the strength of our sports programme and the dedication of our staff in nurturing individual potential. We celebrate these successes regularly, inspiring younger pupils and reinforcing our belief that with the right support, girls can achieve excellence in sport.

Leadership and Development

Sport in the Senior School is a platform for leadership. Pupils can take on roles such as Sports Captains, Team Leaders, and Mentors, helping to organise events, support younger pupils, and promote sport across the school.
