Physical Education

“Girls playing sports is not about winning gold medals. It’s about self-esteem, learning to compete and learning how hard you have to work in order to achieve your goals“
(3-time Olympic gold medallist Jackie Joyner-Kersee)

Sport plays an important role in the lives of young people; improving fitness, developing social skills and increasing confidence.  Sport teaches us how to deal with disappointment and how to triumph in the face of adversity.  It teaches us the merits of commitment and determination and makes us stronger as individuals.

At AESG, our girls get the chance to work both individually and as a team in lessons, extra-curricular practices, inter-house competitions and inter-school matches.  Through these opportunities, students at AESG improve a whole host of personal skills required to succeed in their future careers.

Physical Education is a popular subject with almost half of our students participating in
extra-curricular practices.  Examinable Physical Education is offered at GCSE and A Level where girls can learn the theory behind sport.  In addition, the biennial ski trip provides challenges for beginner and experienced skiers as well as allowing girls to work alongside others from different year groups.

Extra-curricular Sport

Extra-curricular activities are available to all students.  Those who attend practices regularly will be selected to represent AESG in inter-school matches and tournaments.
Extra-curricular activities:  Hockey, Netball, Football, Badminton, Cross Country, Biathlon, Rounders, Tennis, Athletics, Show Jumping.
Team success 2010-2011:

  • Year 8 Netball team – Winners of the Macclesfield and District Netball B League
  • Year 8 Rounders team – Winners of the Macclesfield and District Rounders Tournament
  • Year 9 Netball team – Second in Macclesfield and District Netball A League
  • Year 10 Netball team – Winners of the Macclesfield and District Netball B League
  • Year 10 Biathlon team – Third in the North West Biathlon Championships
  • Senior Netball team – Winners of the Macclesfield and District Netball League and Cheshire representatives at the Regional Round of the Netball National Tournament

We also have a number of girls who have represented District, County and Region in their chosen activity areas which include Netball, Hockey, Cross Country, Biathlon, Athletics, Dressage and Tennis.

All sixth form students continue to attend Physical Education with Wednesday afternoon lessons.  We offer girls the opportunity to participate in activities they may not have experienced before (e.g. Golf, Zumba, Pilates, Self-Defence etc.) and aim to develop the confidence they will need to continue with a healthy and active lifestyle into adulthood.

We offer AS and A Level Physical Education where girls will focus their practical performance.  The theoretical content of the course is a natural progression from GCSE with more detailed study of the human body and exercise, equal opportunities in sport and the psychology of sport and learning.
