German

Learn German and get to know one of the great European cultures!

German is just one of the Modern Languages on offer at AESG. It is a fascinating language to learn, not least because we discover just how much our two languages have in common.  Not only do girls become competent in speaking and using the language but they also learn much about the culture and customs of the German speaking world. There are often opportunities to go on exciting trips, such as to the German Christmas markets in Freiburg.

Learning German is more than mere language learning - it opens up a world of literature, art and music. It is a leading language of science and philosophy and is the second most common language on the Internet. German can be combined with most other subjects at university with the opportunity to spend a year abroad.  You will be in high demand amongst employers if you study German or indeed any other language as ability in a language is comparatively rare and highly prized.

At A level we discuss a wide variety of thought-provoking themes such as relationships in today’s world, multicultural society, popular culture and environmental issues such as the Earth’s energy needs to name but a few. In addition in Year 13 girls are required to study two cultural topics to do with a German-speaking country. This could be a German-speaking region, a period of 20th Century history or the work of an author, artist or musician, even a film director. This gives the girls an exciting opportunity to research and learn about an aspect of the culture which really interests them.
