English
English is a dynamic subject which develops the skills to communicate with confidence and offers enjoyment at all levels. In all English classes there is strong emphasis on active pupil participation, the practical application of language and the understanding of all types of literature. Group work is very popular and oral activities including discussion, role-play and presentation form a significant part of our activities. Each girl is encouraged both to express their creativity and fulfil their academic potential. Above all we hope to promote enjoyment of literature and a sense of the range of its possibilities.
Our girls consistently achieve excellent examination results at both GCSE and A Level.
100% of girls achieved grades A* - C for their GCSE in English (2010)
61% of girls achieved a grade A* or A
100% achieved grades A* - E in A Level Language (2010)
Cambridge Pre-U Literature – 43% Distinctions (including one D1 which is higher than A* grade for A Level)
We offer a choice of English Language AS/A2 (AQA B) and Cambridge Pre-U Literature in English. It is a measure of our success that so many of our girls choose to study English at A Level and at University. We have a strong track-record with Oxbridge applicants and send our students to a wide variety of courses at reputable universities.
The English Language course is very popular with students who are attracted by the prospect of studying topics such as the development of Old English into Modern English, the ways in which children acquire their first language and the differences between the speech of men and women. The Cambridge Pre-U Literature in English is a relatively new course designed to enable students to undertake independent and self directed learning; it enhances their ability to think laterally, critically and creatively. Pupils have the opportunity to study a wide range of fiction from writers as varied as Alexander Pope, Brian Friel, Shakespeare and Virginia Woolf. To compliment their studies, A-Level students take part in an annual weekend trip to the RSC at Stratford.
