Art
Art inspires the imagination, it encourages pupils to open their eyes and see as they have never seen before. Girls will discover ways to make and create, whilst developing knowledge about other artists work. Best of all, girls learn about themselves as artists. Art is a very popular subject, and the department aims to create an exciting environment where pupils of all abilities can explore and develop their artistic potential.
The girls enjoy experiencing the work of artists’ first hand during educational visits to Madrid, Figueres and Barcelona. In addition, selected pupils exhibit their work at the prestigious Lowry Art Gallery and the girls’ work is on permanent exhibition at The Christies Hospital in Manchester.
The department has a history of winning competitions, the most recent being an all inclusive trip for the Year 10 girls to see the sites of Ancient Egypt sponsored by Manchester Museum’s Tutankhamun exhibition and Red Sea Holidays.
At A Level, the girls follow the AQA syllabus. The department offers the Fine Art specialism which explores a wide variety of media, processes and techniques. Girls further develop their imaginative, creative and intuitive power, which assists the understanding of art, design and crafts in a contemporary society and in other times and cultures. Sixth Form girls studying Art have the added benefit of their own Art studio exclusively for their use.
