Latin

Latin is an amazing subject and in Latin lessons at AESG we not only study the Latin language which is fascinating and helps us with grammar and English and other foreign languages, but we also learn about the Romans and how they lived, Roman Britain, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and much more. As we progress in Latin we read works by Roman authors and appreciate the lasting influence of Classical Literature.
Our girls have achieved excellent results at both GCSE and A Level.
100% of girls achieved grades A*-C for their GCSE in Latin (2011)
100% of girls achieved grades A*-C in A Level Latin. (2011)

Girls who have studied Latin at AESG have gone on to top universities such as Oxford and Durham. Latin helps you to stand out from the crowd; it shows that you have excellent cognitive skills and the ability to use logic as well as a good memory. The study of Latin is an excellent preparation for any career or higher education course and enhances your CV or UCAS form.

In Years 7, 8 and 9:
Every girl in Year 7 gets the opportunity to study Latin for one third of the year. In Year 7 we learn some core grammar while finding out about life in ancient Pompeii. Roman houses and food are popular topics for Year 7. Once girls opt for Latin in Year 8 we augment the grammar knowledge and learn more about the Romans. Gladiators, Roman baths and Roman theatre are all studied using a wide range of activities. Girls in Year 9 are able to read increasingly complex Latin stories and through these we study the inhabitants Roman Britain and also what went on in Ancient Egypt.

The whole course is taught in a modern, interactive manner including drama, games, songs and creative activities. The Cambridge Latin Course is supported with online resources which the girls can use at home as well as in class and these are found at www.cambridgescp.com
