German
Learn German and get to know one of the great European cultures!
German is just one of the Modern Languages on offer at AESG. It is a fascinating language to learn, not least because we discover just how much our two languages have in common. Not only do girls become competent in speaking and using the language but they also learn much about the culture and customs of the German speaking world. There are often opportunities to go on exciting trips, such as to the German Christmas markets in Freiburg.
Learning German is more than mere language learning - it opens up a world of literature, art and music. It is a leading language of science and philosophy and is the second most common language on the Internet. German can be combined with most other subjects at university with the opportunity to spend a year abroad. You will be in high demand amongst employers if you study German or indeed any other language as ability in a language is comparatively rare and highly prized.
In Year 7 all pupils study German for a term as a “taster” session, during which they learn some of the basics like greetings and numbers as well as learning about various aspects of culture in the German-speaking world.
In Year 8 the girls learn how to talk about themselves and their families, their hobbies, their home and their school as well as being introduced to the present tense and the case system.
In Year 9 girls learn how to go shopping in Germany and how to talk about holidays, going out and healthy living. The girls learn how to express themselves in the past and future and learn how to use increasingly sophisticated language structures in preparation for IGCSE.
