English is not enough! Do not be fooled by the suggestion that everyone speaks English or even wants to speak English - 75% of the world’s population don’t speak any English at all!
Languages help us build friendships and good relationships with people across the globe, and understand and experience different cultures in a way that enhances and enriches our own lives, too. They open up travel opportunities, the chance to study or live abroad and, ultimately, allow us to experience things that speaking English alone we simply wouldn’t be capable of. Speaking another language is a great way to understand different cultures right here on your doorstep.
A foreign language, whether spoken fluently or conversationally, can give access to a much wider range of jobs in the UK and overseas. Employers often struggle to find English employees who can speak a foreign language and so having a language sets you apart and gives you more opportunities in the workplace.
Aside from all of this, language learning makes you smarter. It improves your brain capacity, demands that you think in a way which differs to other subjects and sharpens your memory. It also improves your understanding of your own language and prevents the brain from ageing!
